This year’s program will have a focus on food and togetherness too, so get ready for a family-friendly cultural experience!
What is Juneteenth?
In case you don’t know, Juneteenth celebrates June 19th, 1865. This date is when Union troops came to Galveston, Texas to announce that the Civil War had already ended and the enslaved people there had been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. This came significantly after the actual proclamation, which had been purposely ignored by Texas enslavers. Juneteenth celebrates the long-overdue and momentous day of liberation.
There is still tons of work to be done in the U.S., but Juneteenth serves as a wonderful time to celebrate Black Americans, Black joy and liberation, and Black Excellence. It’s also a wonderful time to support Black businesses and restaurants, donate to Black causes, and volunteer for Black orgs!
