Atlanta is a city that is always on the forefront of change and culture. Here, we recognize and honor our differences, and always celebrate ways to lift each other up. For an example, check out how Atlanta was celebrating native history earlier this month.
This October, there will be no better way to support our community and show all the love Atlanta has to offer, than by walking with Little Amal.
Who is Little Amal?
Little Amal is a 12-foot puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee girl built by Handspring Puppet Company, who travels across different countries spreading awareness and expressing solidarity with refugees. So far, she’s traveled across an impressive fifteen countries and met over a million people.
This fall, Little Amal is traveling 6,000 miles across the United States in one of the largest free festivals ever created. And on October 10th, she’s coming to Atlanta.
Amal Walks Across America will be hosted by the Center for Puppetry Arts, in conjunction with Flux Projects, Decatur Arts Alliance, and MARTA Artbound.
What should attendees expect?
So often, refugee children are forced to leave their homes with little more than a stuffed animal for comfort. Guests will join Little Amal in a short walk, as she searches for her lost stuffed dog. The Center for Puppetry Arts encourages attendees to immerse themselves in the experience by bringing along their favorite stuffed animal.
It is always free to walk with Amal.
The event will also feature performances by The Black Sheep Ensemble, Moving in the Spirit, and Dekalb School of the Arts Chorus.
