There’s a very niche beverage taking the ATL by storm thanks to this unique ‘meadery’ in Poncey-Highland. Monks Meadery is Georgia’s first ever meadery, which is where they create an alcoholic libation created with fermented honey.
By mixing the honey with water, and other added ingredients such as fruits, spices, grains, or hops, mead is made. The experimental possibilities from the diverse added ingredients on offer is seen throughout Monks’ extensive menu.
The meadery is owned by two high school friends, Martin Key and Justin Schoendorf, who were always interested in brewing, resulting in the duo stumbling into this unique craft. During the company’s foundations, Georgia did not allow the production of beer above 6% ABV until 2004. Hence why they turned to mead, and the rest is history!
As a long lost craft in its origin country of England, the name of this special bar in Atlanta comes from its history, as monks used to keep bees and create the mead for religious ceremonies. So step back in time and try this vanished drink at one of the most unique tasting rooms in Atlanta. We recommend trying out their flight to get a true taste of the menu at Monks.
