If you’ve spent any time outside this week in Atlanta, you know it’s HOT outside. We haven’t been able to step outside without breaking into a sweat all week. And yesterday, June 26th, we officially hit 100 degrees for the first time since August of 2019.
Even though Wednesday was the first time we’ve hit triple digits officially, the weather in the upper 90s all week has felt as hot as 100 several times. According to 11Alive News, the average temperature for June 26th is 89 degrees, a whole 11 degrees cooler than it has been. Yesterday’s record temperature also hit a daily record of 100 years ago! It hasn’t been since 1914 (!!!) that Atlanta was 100 degrees on June 26th.
What should I do to stay safe?
The best thing you can do during this record heat wave is stay out of the heat and sun. Wear sunscreen and protective clothing if you have to be outside, and make sure to stay hydrated. Drink lots of water and electrolyte-replacing drinks to stay safe outside.
Make sure not to physically exert yourself outside too much either. (Maybe skip the outdoor run and opt for a treadmill run indoors instead!)
It’s not staying this hot, don’t worry…
This week, we should actually see (relatively) cooler temperatures in Atlanta. According to 11Alive, temperatures will still be above average for this time of year, but they’ll be lower than they have been. Hey, we’ll take it, right?
If you need some nice ways to stay cool, don’t worry, we’ve got recs:
- Go to one of Atlanta’s amazing pools
- Or a rooftop hotel pool
- OR rent your own private pool by the hour
- Grab some delicious ice cream
- Shoot the ‘Hooch on a river float
- Or enjoy these fun indoor activities
Stay safe out there, Atlanta! And stay cool!
