Why is Atlanta one of the best cities for vegetarians and vegans?
Atlanta ranks on the overall list of most vegetarian and vegan-friendly cities at #17, just below Birmingham, Alabama. (Somewhat surprisingly.) Atlanta ranks well in the quality of vegetarian and vegan options, the accessibility of non-meat choices, and the diversity of veggie and vegan cuisines. Importantly, Atlanta also ranked in the #1 spot for having the most salad shops per capita.
The only category where Atlanta ranks significantly lower than most of the other veggie and vegan friendly spots was in affordability, coming in at #68 out of 100. In other words, eating vegetarian and vegan is easy in the city… but not so easy on your wallet.

That would be Portland, Oregon, beating L.A. by more than 4 points.
How did WalletHub come up with these stats?
In order to determine the best cities for vegans and vegetarians in the U.S., WalletHub compared the 100 most populated cities across three key dimensions:
- Affordability
- Diversity, Accessibility & Quality
- Vegetarian Lifestyle
From those main categories, the researchers at WalletHub broke it down into 17 relevant metrics–including everything from cost of vegetarian groceries to how many restaurants in town had vegan and vegetarian options… and beyond.
