President Biden announced this National Day of Mourning in an executive order. It is the same day as Carter’s funeral, which will begin at 10am at the Washington National Cathedral.
According to a report by USA Today,
President Biden’s executive order calls for all federal offices to be closed and flags be displayed at half-staff on all public buildings and grounds throughout the United States for a period of 30 days.
This means the flags will be at half-staff until January 28th, 2025.
What will be closed for the National Day of Mourning?
Here’s a list of some things that will be closed for the National Day of Mourning:
- Financial Markets (The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq)
- The U.S. Postal Service (this does not include UPS and FedEX, generally)
- All federal agencies and offices
- Military schools
- All organizations affiliated with the U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity
Will banks be open on the National Day of Mourning?
Yes, because this is not an official national holiday, banks will still be open on January 9th. Check with your local bank if you have any questions.
Will schools still be open on the National Day of Mourning?
Yes, most public schools will be open as usual on January 9th. Only military schools will close.
