The history surrounding The Chapel on Sycamore in Atlanta is somewhat of a mystery, because almost all the original records about the building burnt down in a courthouse fire in the mid 1800s. Historians believe that the historic landmark first started off as a place of worship for the Decatur First United Methodist Church in 1826. Having attracted the attention of multiple donors who’ve funded its refurbishments over the past two centuries, the chapel stands proud as one of the most historic spots in Decatur, Atlanta.
A little bit of history on The Chapel on Sycamore
The building’s original structure was made entirely out of wood. However, after devastating fire, efforts were made to replace most of its wooden materials. The building underwent multiple refurbishments from the mid to the late 1800s, and the construction of the final stone structure was completed in 1897 at a cost of $6,626.
Many of the renovations were made possible thanks to generous donations. For example, the beautiful Tiffany stained glass window was donated in memory of Eliza Pearce – a well-to-do member of the church who passed away in 1897.
