Atlanta isn’t really known for its snowy Christmases. In fact, snow in general in Atlanta is a rare sight. And this year is no different. If you were flushing ice down the toilet and wearing your PJs inside out in hopes of a white Christmas, we’ve got some bad news for you. This year’s Christmas is expected to be a wet one, and a relatively warm one too.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports, “Atlanta and most of Georgia will remain overcast for the holiday, with a high of 57 degrees and a low of 53… Christmas Eve on Sunday might be your best opportunity to go outdoors for any family activities. A mostly cloudy day and a high of 62 degrees are in the forecast.” That’s definitely too warm for snow, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be precipitation.
The National Weather Service says to expect, “Scattered to widespread rain showers expected late Sunday through Monday.” There’s even a small chance of some thunder as well.
If you’re disappointed by a warm, rainy Christmas, you’re not alone. But thankfully this won’t be the warmest Christmas on record for Atlanta. The AJC reports that, “The hottest Christmas on record was in 2015 when it reached 75 degrees in Atlanta.”
Was there ever snow on Christmas in Atlanta?
Some of us might remember the huge snowstorm that hit the Southeast over a decade ago. The AJC says, “In 2010, Christmas Eve began with rain and quickly changed to snow across North Georgia, where 6 to 8 inches was reported following a strong storm system that moved across the Southeast. In Atlanta, just over 1 inch of snow was reported and 2 inches fell in Athens. It was the first white Christmas in metro Atlanta since 1882.”
Maybe next year, Atlanta.
